You had to go back to Valentine’s Day to find a missed shot by Malik Reneau.
And even that day he finished with four makes in a row.
The junior forward made his final four shots against UCLA on Feb. 14, made all seven attempts against Purdue on Feb. 23, and started Saturday’s game against Washington by making his first six.
Those 17 consecutive makes from the field are the most by an IU basketball player in at least 25 years, an IU spokesperson tells The Daily Hoosier.
What’s particularly impressive about Reneau’s historic streak is that he missed a game on Wednesday against Penn State.
But clearly he was unfazed.
It wasn’t clear whether Reneau would play on Saturday at Washington after he was hospitalized on Wednesday just hours ahead of IU’s home game against Penn State. After the game on Saturday, IU coach Mike Woodson said there was some hesitancy to let him join the team on the flight to Seattle out of fear he might pass his illness.
But Reneau was able to travel with the team to the West Coast on Thursday, and he looked as sharp as ever against the Huskies in the first half.
“We needed him tonight, and he responded,” Woodson said.
Reneau missed his first shot of the second half to end the streak. He finished the game with 22 points in 25 minutes off the bench.
In his last four appearances, Reneau has posted 17.5 points per game on 74% shooting from the floor.
Indiana defeated Washington 78-62 to move to 18-11 on the season and 9-9 in the Big Ten.
