Indiana All-American Michael Brinegar finished second in the 800 meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials on Thursday night to earn a berth to the Olympic Games later this summer in Tokyo.
Brineger finished in 7 minutes, 49.94 seconds, just behind first-place finisher Bobby Fink at 7:48.22. They became the first U.S. qualifiers in the men’s 800-meter freestyle, as the event is being run for the first time at the Olympics.
Brinegar has twice been named All-American in the 1,650-freestyle, earning 10th place in the event at the NCAA Championships in 2021 and second place in 2019.
