Some members of the Indiana baseball team have gone from the disappointment of a season ending loss to Texas on Sunday night to the thrill of being drafted by a Major League Baseball team within a matter of days.
Coming into the 2018 draft, 90 Hoosiers had been selected by a MLB team all-time. Chicago Cub Kyle Schwarber is the earliest selected Hoosier ever in the draft. He was taken in the 1st round, 4th overall, in 2014.
With a total of four Hoosiers taken in the 2018 draft, IU has now had 24 players drafted in the last six years.
Players that are drafted with college eligibility remaining have until August 15th to decide whether to sign with the team that selected them, or return to school.
Here are the four Indiana players that were selected this year:
JONATHAN STIEVER
The first Hoosier to be selected was on Tuesday, when starting pitcher Jonathan Stiever was selected in the 5th round by the Chicago White Sox. He was the 138th overall selection.
Stiever is a junior right-hander from Cedarburg, Wisconsin. For the 2018 season he compiled a 5-6 record and a 3.41 earned run average. He led the Big Ten with 97 strikeouts.
LUKE MILLER
The second Hoosier selected was third baseman Luke Miller, in the 22nd round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Miller was the 647th overall selection. He was drafted 31st in the 2017 draft by the Minnesota Twins.
Miler is a junior from Muncie, Indiana. For the 2018 season he hit .309 and hit 13 home runs and had 47 RBIs in 47 games.
LOGAN SOWERS
Sowers was the third Hoosiers selected in the 2018 MLB Draft. He went in the 28th round to the Chicago White Sox.
A 6-foot-5 senior from Lafayette, Indiana, Sowers hit .299 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs. He is in the top 10 in IU’s all-time home runs, doubles and hits list, and improved his batting average every year.
TIM HERRIN
Herrin was the fourth Hoosier to be drafted. He was selected in the 29th round by the Cleveland Indians.
A 6-foot-5 junior left-hander from Terre Haute, Indiana, he appeared in 17 games including 10 starts. He compiled a 6-0 record with a 3.22 ERA.
