Indiana had plenty of chances the last two days to keep its streak of Big Ten series wins alive.
Instead, missed opportunities were the story for the Hoosiers (28-21-1, 13-8 B1G) this weekend at Nebraska after a dramatic come-from-behind Friday evening win.
IU left nine runners on base in the final five innings of a Saturday loss to the Cornhuskers, and were just 2-13 (.154) with runners on base in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat at Haymarket Park.
Freshman second baseman Jasen Oliver and sophomore shortstop Tyler Cerny each hit solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings respectively to tie the game on Sunday. But that was all the offense IU could muster. They had prime opportunities to score in the third and seventh but failed to capitalize each time.
Each team scored just 14 runs the entire weekend in a back-and-forth affair but it was Nebraska that received timely hitting in each contest to take the final two games of the series.
The series loss, IU’s first since March, is a major blow to their regular season conference title chances.
Indiana returns to action on Tuesday at Louisville before finishing the regular season slate at home against Michigan next weekend.
One more conference win will clinch the Hoosiers’ berth in the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha (begins May 21).
