Indiana has one of the fastest risers in the class of 2023 on campus this weekend.
Covington, Ga. based combo guard Jakai Newton is currently taking one of his five junior year official visits in Bloomington. He arrived on Thursday.
Newton attends a high school with the same name. Newton High School in Covington is expected to be one of the top teams in Georgia this year as the squad features multiple Division One players.
It was during the spring and summer on the AAU circuit when Newton’s recruitment really took off. Playing for the Atlanta Xpress on the Under Armour circuit, Newton saw a wave of offers and he has now made a big move up the rankings.
A 4-star prospect, Newton made his first appearance in the 247Sports Composite class of 2023 rankings this week at No. 67. Rivals puts him at No. 43. He is an athletic and physical guard who plays with a tenacious style, is committed to defense and can score on all three levels.
Auburn, Cincinnati, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Xavier are the main schools involved to this point.
Assistant coach Yasir Rosemond is leading the recruitment for Indiana. He was down in Georgia in September to visit Newton.
