IU basketball: Maryland 79 Indiana 78 — Three keys, highlights, final stats

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana lost to Maryland Sunday afternoon at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, 79-78.

Maryland led 38-37 at halftime. Mackenzie Mgbako and Myles Rice led the Hoosiers with 16 points apiece. Oumar Ballo added 14, and Malik Reneau chipped in 10.

The three keys to the game, highlights and final stats are below.

The Hoosiers (14-7, 5-5 Big Ten) will face Purdue in their next game on Friday at 8 p.m. ET at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette.

    Three keys to the game

    1. Maryland rains down threes: Indiana’s 3-point defense has been problematic lately, and Maryland took advantage. The Terps shot 12 for 24 from 3-point range on the game, with a 4-for-8 mark in the second half. This was IU’s fourth time in the last five contests allowing at least 10 threes. Ja’Kobi Gillespie (4 for 10), Rodney Rice (5 for 7), and Selton Miguel (3 for 6) accounted for most of/all of the damage.  Rice made the game-winner from long range with seven seconds remaining.

    2. Poor foul shooting: Indiana wasted some critical opportunities at the foul line on Sunday, shooting just 9 for 15 as a team. That’s IU’s second-worst free-throw shooting performance of the season, beating out only the Chattanooga game. Trey Galloway’s miss with just 22 seconds left proved the difference between a regulation defeat and an opportunity in overtime.  Kanaan Carlyle was 0 for 2.

    3. Unclutch down the stretch: The Hoosiers went on a crucial 10-0 run over a two-minute stretch from 5:18 remaining to 3:07, which gave them a five-point lead. But from that point, over the final three minutes of the game, IU shot just 1 for 5 from the field. And the Terps shot 4 for 5 over the same stretch, with Rodney Rice hitting the clutch 3-pointer to put them ahead for good with seven second left. Myles Rice came up short on his contested 3-point attempt at the buzzer for the win.
