With the transfer portal recently in the rearview and the class of 2025 still in play, Indiana is only just now really starting to really focus on the class of 2026.
So for the class of 2027 — still just high school sophomores — there is a long way to go.
But there’s an in-state phenom in the class who has been on the IU radar for a while. And he’s becoming a highly-coveted national prospect.
On Tuesday, national recruiting outlet Rivals published their first rankings for the 2027 class, and they slotted Evansville, Ind. wing Jaylan Mitchell in as a 5-star and the No. 4 overall player.
Here’s what Rivals wrote about Mitchell after publishing their rankings:
A 6-foot-8 forward out of Evansville, Ind., Mitchell has already played two seasons of high-level grassroots hoops, as he played up with Brad Beal Elite’s EYBL 15U team as a rising eighth grader a year ago and ran with the 16U squad this summer. Mitchell is one of the most well-rounded and physical wings in the class and is able to overpower defenders on his way to the bucket because of his developed frame and quick first step. He’s already an established shot creator and has shown signs of advanced passing.
Mitchell attends Reitz High School, the same school that produced Khristian Lander a few years ago. He averaged 15.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.2 steals per game there as a freshman.
Mitchell’s father Jeremiah played college basketball at Southeastern Illinois College and Oakland City.
So far Mitchell has reported offers from Arizona State, Illinois, Missouri and TCU.
Mitchell is also No. 4 and a 5-star at ESPN.
Indiana has only offered one player thus far in the 2027 class, but it seems like just a matter of time until they offer Mitchell.
After another set of eye-catching performances playing up on 16U, we spoke with 2027 prospect Jaylan Mitchell, who touched on his journey, building & growing off of his perimeter foundation, studying SGA and the early advice he shared, growing as a leader, staying humble, his… pic.twitter.com/kAJmHcMZui
