One of the top in-state players in the class of 2023 is right in IU’s backyard, and Bloomington North forward JaQualon (“JQ”) Roberts is firmly on the new Indiana staff’s radar.
During his first two years of high school, Roberts has been thought of as a good athlete with a big frame, impressive length and a high ceiling. He seemed to tap into that potential this spring and summer, demonstrating an improved handle and jump shot as he helped lead his 2023 Indiana Elite Adidas squad on a memorable run.
The Indiana Elite 16Us went into their final weekend of the summer with a perfect 40-0 mark before losing in overtime in Vegas to wrap-up AAU action. Roberts’ improvement since his sophomore high school season was a major reason why Indiana Elite was so successful.
After averaging 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the 2020-21 campaign at North, Roberts put up some big-time scoring performances over the summer including 40 and 35 point outbursts in the final weekend.
The 6-foot-7 Roberts’ emerging ability to put the ball on the floor and knock down perimeter shots, coupled with his high motor and athleticism has made him a clear Division One college prospect.
Several schools have taken notice, including IUPUI, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Indiana State, Stetson, Akron and Massachusetts. All of those programs offered scholarships this summer.
Roberts heard from IU when coaching staffs were able to contact him directly starting on June 15, and he has spoken to Mike Woodson.
With North just a few miles away, it will be easy for IU to keep an eye on Roberts during what should be a very interesting 2021-22 junior campaign. Paired with a fellow Indiana Elite player, point guard Nick Klaiber, North should be a team to reckon with.
If Roberts can build on his strong summer, it won’t be surprising to see high major offers start to come in during that junior season.
