Indiana is involved early with the top incoming sophomore in West Virginia, class of 2023 guard Maki Johnson.
Johnson spent his freshman season playing on a stacked Huntington Prep roster that included more than a half dozen high major bound upperclassmen including former IU recruiting targets A.J. Hoggard, Jaemyn Brakefield and Zach Loveday.
The 6-foot-4 Johnson received his first Division One scholarship offer before his freshman campaign from Akron. Since then high majors have followed with offers coming in from Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Auburn. Indiana joins several other programs in showing early interest according to a report by Scoopman TV.
The major national recruiting sites have not yet issued rankings for the class of 2023, but Johnson is the top 2023 player in West Virginia according to Prep Hoops. Johnson is No. 40 player in the national rankings according to that service.
Already tall for a freshman guard, Johnson has impressive handles, especially for his age. That comfort with the ball extends to finishing around the basket confidently with both hands. Johnson has a good looking stroke on his jump shot and has the early look of a player that will be able to impact high major college basketball games at all three levels.
For AAU Johnson plays for the Pennsylvania based and Adidas sponsored Wildcats Select program. He is teammates there with another Indiana target, class of 2022 guard Isaac McKneely.
