Indiana has formally entered the mix for an already talented 7-foot center from Texas with a much higher ceiling.
Demetrius Stanton of Dead Stock Visuals was the first to report that IU had offered class of 2022 big man Vince Iwuchukwu.
Iwuchukwu is ranked No. 25 overall in the class of 2022 according to the 247Sports Composite. He is a 4-star recruit and the No. 3 center in the class according to that same service.
247Sports national analyst Brandon Jenkins gave this assessment of Iwuchukwu in January, posted on his profile page there:
“Iwuchukwu is a fairly raw and mechanical big man prospect with a high upside who has been a steadfast worker and it has helped him make gradual improvement towards his body and skill set. The foundation of his production will be determined by how hard he plays. He has become more assertive and committed to rebounding the basketball and is a really tall and long prospect with elite shot altering capabilities. He shows flashes of skill, but nothing is completely polished just yet. He has a good looking release on his jump shot and developing touch that extends all the way to the three-point line. His upside is in his feel and awareness offensively. He rushes at times when he receives the ball offensively, which can result in a forced shot or turnover. The confidence, energy, and love for the game are there but once the game slows down for him, we could see Iwuchukwu transform into an elite high major center down the road.”
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Iwuchukwu played his junior year of school ball at La Lumiere in Laporte, Ind. Assistant coach Dane Fife is known for having good relationships at that school. He helped Michigan State land former La Lumiere star Jaren Jackson.
For spring and summer AAU basketball, Iwuchukwu plays for JL3 Elite, a program out of Houston sponsored by John Lucas. Several reports describe Iwuchukwu as a fast improving prospect this spring with an emerging perimeter skills and a 3-point shot.
Baylor, Purdue, Florida State, USC, UCLA, Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU and Kansas have all also offered. Baylor is widely thought to be in the strongest position by analysts and publishers at both 247Sports and Rivals.
