Indiana announced Wednesday morning James Madison transfer running back Ty Son Lawton has signed with the Hoosiers.
Lawton has one year of eligibility remaining.
Lawton transferred to James Madison for the 2023 campaign after starting his career at FCS Stony Brook. He had 126 carries for 568 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and five rushing touchdowns this season for JMU. He also hauled in 19 receptions for 174 receiving yards (9.2 yards per reception) and one receiving score.
In 2019, Lawton logged his first career 100 yard game and scored three touchdowns against Curt Cignetti and James Madison. Lawton led his conference in rushing in 2021. After being named the 2022 Preseason CAA Offensive Player of the Year, Lawton missed most of the 2022 season with an ankle injury.
The 5-foot-9, 205-pound Lawton appeared in 27 games at Stony Brook from 2018-22. There he had 457 carries for 2,102 rushing yards (4.6 yards per rush) and 21 touchdowns.
The Staten Island, N.Y. product was unranked as a high school recruit.
IU has seven scholarship running backs as of Wednesday: Lawton and fellow transfer Justice Ellison (Wake Forest), returning players Josh Henderson, Trent Howland, and David Holloman, and freshmen Khobie Martin and Justus Savage.
