Trey Walker didn’t play football in high school.
But he’s now on a football scholarship in the Big Ten.
IU once again found a fun way to break the news to a former walk-on he’s receiving a scholarship.
Walker was a three-year letterwinner playing hockey at New Trier H.S. in Winnetka, Ill. Movie character Happy Gilmore was a hockey player turned golfer, and that’s where IU turned for inspiration on Saturday inside Memorial Stadium.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds, Walker joined the program in 2019. He has appeared in seven games, including five in 2022. He’s been a scout team player of the week six times, and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in both 2021 and 2020.
Walker is the third former walk-on tight end in the last year to be placed on scholarship, following James Bomba and Ryan Barnes.
