For the first time in three years, IU will have a new kicker in 2023.
Three year starter Charles Campbell announced on Monday he plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens next week.
“Dear Hoosier family,” Campbell wrote in a graphic attached to a Twitter post.
“The past five years at Indiana University have been a blessing. IU has shaped me into the man I am today, and has left me with education of a lifetime. I will be forever grateful for Coach Allen, Coach Teegardin, Coach McInerney, and all other coaches who have invested in me. Lastly I would not be here today without my teammates who have been my greatest friends through the years.
“With this being said, I have decided to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer for my last year of eligibility.”
After arriving at IU in 2018 from Jackson, Tenn., Campbell redshirted the 2018 season. In 2019 he made both of his field goals including a crucial second half kick in an overtime win at Purdue.
Campbell made 19 of his first 20 field goals with IU, through a 4-for-4 effort at Western Kentucky in 2021. But he made just 20-of-31 (64.5 percent) for the rest of his time at IU.
Indiana will still have walk-on kicker Chris Freeman on the roster after Campbell enters the portal. Class of 2023 5-star verbal commit Nicolas Radicic, a kicker out of Texas, is expected to sign next month and join the team for the 2023 season.
Under new NCAA rules passed in August, players now have to enter the portal within set windows. The first opens the day after the championship teams are selected, which will be Dec. 5, and closes 45 days later on Jan. 18, 2023. There is also a 15-day spring period from May 1-15.
