“That kid is going to be a really good football player here.”
That was the first thing Tom Allen said to co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chad Wilt about walk-on linebacker Matt Hohlt back in February of 2022.
This week Allen and Wilt stood in the program’s team room and announced to the full squad just how good Hohlt has become.
It’s one of the best traditions in college football, when walk-ons get a full ride.
On Thursday evening in Bloomington it was time to give out a scholarship in the IU program, and there was no one more deserving than Hohlt.
Indiana’s tradition under Tom Allen has been to surprise the recipient in front of the entire team.
The IU football Twitter account posted a video of the moment when Allen told Hohlt the news.

Hailing from Greenwood, Ind., the Center Grove H.S. product walked-on at IU in 2021 and appeared in two games.
As a redshirt freshman in 2022, Hohlt appeared in all 10 games he was available with one start before missing the final two games with an injury. He compiled 12 solo tackles and 19 total tackles in 2022.
Hohlt’s father Eric was a walk-on at IU from 1982-85.
Former walk-on defensive lineman Gavin Everett, also from Center Grove, received a scholarship in 2018.
