Indiana made another quality addition to its future defense on Sunday.
Class of 2022 Vero Beach, Fla. cornerback James Monds III announced his verbal commitment to IU on his Instagram page.
“I will be continuing my college and athletic journey at Indiana University,” Monds said during a live session as he put on an Indiana hat.
A 3-star recruit, the 6-foot and 170 pound Monds is the No. 695 overall player in the class of 2022 according to the 247Sports Composite. According to that same service he is the No. 67 cornerback in the class.
A Florida 6A first-team all-state selection, Monds was targeted 10 times in coverage as a junior according to TC Palm. He ended up breaking up nine passes and also had an interception. Monds also returned a punt as well as a kickoff for touchdowns.
Monds comes from a long line of football players. His father James was a defensive back who played at Toledo and Bethune-Cookman.. His cousin Mario Monds was a defensive tackle that was picked in the sixth-round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. His uncle Wonder Monds was a cornerback at Nebraska in the 70s who was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 1976 NFL Draft.
With Monds, Indiana now has nine overall commits in the 2022 class, including three from Florida and two cornerbacks. Monds joins Trevell Mullen as a cornerback commit in the Hoosiers’ 2022 class.
Monds chose Indiana over Nebraska, Wisconsin, Mississippi State, Michigan State and Miami (Fla).. He also held offers from Arizona, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan, Maryland, Minnesota, Penn State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and many others.
“I really like the coaching staff and I feel like I can make a big impact there,” Monds told 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins on Sunday. “I really liked the city. I could definitely see myself living there.”
