Maurice Freeman gave his mother a birthday present on Saturday when he announced his college choice.
Indiana fans got a gift too.
A class of 2021 Virginia based safety, Freeman announced that he has verbally committed to IU on his Instagram page on Saturday afternoon.

“I want to thank my coaches, my family, God, Freeman said on his Instagram Live stream.
“I’m committed to Indiana University. I can’t wait. I’m a Hoosier!”
Freeman attends Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He intends to skip his senior season of high school football as the state of Virginia postponed the season until the spring. Instead, Freeman will enroll early at IU in January.
A bond with IU head coach Tom Allen helped seal the deal for IU.
“It’s just the love with all the coaches,” he said. “I talk to coach Allen almost every day. We have a great relationship and I haven’t had a relationship like that with a head coach,” Freeman told Brian Dohn of 247Sports.
“Me and coach Allen, we have a strong relationship. And the good thing about him is he coaches the defense so that is what is making me want to commit more to that school. Also, I get love from every coach on the coaching staff.”
The 6-foot-1 and 200 pound Freeman made 55 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, and forced five fumbles, broke up four passes, and intercepted one pass during the 2019 season.
A three-star recruit, the 247Sports industry aggregated Composite ranks Freeman as the No. 1,139 player overall in the 2021 class and the No. 91 safety. In 247Sports’ own rankings he is the No. 39 safety nationally.
Freeman becomes the 13th commit in the class of 2021 for Indiana, and the second of the day. In-state tackle Joshua Sales committed to IU earlier on Saturday.
IU now has three safety commits in the 2021 class, as Freeman joins Aubrey Burks and Jordan Grier. Indiana recruits safeties to play its husky position as well.
Freeman chose Indiana over a list of suitors that included Ole Miss, Illinois, Appalachian State, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, and Louisville.
