While they arrived in good shape for the first day of fall camp, Indiana wasn’t going to make it through to week one completely healthy.
No team ever does.
The first wave of injuries came during a weekend scrimmage. Indiana thudded (full speed until initial contact) the scrimmage in an attempt to reduce the casualties, but coach Curt Cignetti still had a few setbacks to report on Monday.
“We had a couple depth guys have some injuries,” Cignetti said Monday morning. “Josh Philostin injured his knee and will be out a while. Same with [Andrew] Depaepe, the transfer from Michigan State. JoJo Johnson will be out a couple weeks. Other than that, we’ve got some minor things, but nothing significant.”
Philostin is a true freshman defensive back from Palm Beach, Fla. (Cardinal Newman High School). He was a four-star recruit by ESPN and a 3-star according to the other outlets. Philostin was a consensus a top-70 cornerback by ESPN (No. 36), 247Sports (No. 66), Rivals (No. 68) and On3 (No. 54). A prolonged absence due to injury would make him a strong candidate to redshirt in 2024.
Depaepe, a former 4-star defensive end, transferred in during the offseason from Michigan State after one season there. His brother William is a true freshman defensive lineman at IU.
Johnson is thought to be competing for a spot in the rotation at cornerback. The former Notre Dame and Iowa Western C.C. product played in all 12 games for IU a season ago. He posted 12 tackles and one pass break-up.
Cignetti also said a week ago that wide receiver E.J. Williams has been dealing with a hamstring injury that has kept him out of practice.
