THREE REASONS WHY IU WON
1. The defense steps up after turnovers. Indiana came into the game without committing a turnover all season. But Kurtis Rourke threw two first half interceptions, and Kaelon Black fumbled before the break as well. But Indiana’s defense delivered 3-and-outs on each ensuing drive. Collectively Maryland gained -1 yards on those first half drives following the turnovers. And that allowed IU a chance to take a 14-7 lead at the break despite a 3-0 turnover deficit.
2. Rourke steadies after bad start. Rourke started the game just 2-of-6 passing with the two interceptions. But he finished 22-of-33 passing for 359 yards and three touchdowns. Indiana had a balanced offensive attack, as the Hoosier running backs carried 35 times for 162 yards and three scores. IU had 512 total yards on the afternoon.
3. The Hoosiers close strong. Maryland tied the game at 21 with a shocking 75 yard run with 7:21 left in the third. But IU responded with touchdowns on their next two drives while stopping Maryland on each of their next two possessions. Overall, Indiana posted 21 unanswered points to take a 42-21 lead with 4:09 left in the game.
