Tight end Peyton Hendershot became the third member of the Indiana offense to be named to a preseason watch list this week.
The Friends of John Mackey released the 2020 John Mackey Award preseason watch list on Friday. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.
Hendershot was one 36 tight ends around the country to be included.
After a record-setting 2019 redshirt sophomore season, Hendershot was named third-team All-Big Ten (media) and honorable-mention All-Big Ten (coaches).
The 6-foot-4 and 250 pound Hendershot set Indiana single-season tight end records in 2019 with 52 receptions and 622 yards.
A starter in all 13 games, Hendershot was tied for fourth among tight ends nationally in catches and 10th in yardage. He finished second among Big Ten tight ends in receptions and yardage, and tied for third in scores. Hendershot posted seven games with 50-or-more yards and six games with five-or-more receptions.
Hendershot was recently fully cleared by the Indiana program following a February incident in Bloomington.
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
The John Mackey Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA and its 25 awards now boast over 800 recipients, dating to 1935. Visit ncfaa.org and @NCFAA on Twitter to learn more about the association.
