Indiana’s Solomon Vanhorse is on the national Comeback Player of the Year watchlist, it was announced on Wednesday by the College Sports Communicators in association with The Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.
The 5-foot-8 and 185-pound Vanhorse announced his transfer to IU in May. He is listed by Indiana as a running back, but he has extensive experience on special teams in the return game as well.
Vanhorse has appeared in 37 career games with nine starts over six seasons at James Madison (2018-23). He redshirted his initial collegiate season, and missed the majority of the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to injuries, including the final 12 games of last season.
The Georgia native qualifies for a seventh season after taking a traditional redshirt, getting a medical hardship waiver, plus the extra season due to COVID-19.
When healthy, Vanhorse can be a versatile weapon. He became the 39th player in FBS or FCS since 1996 to return a kickoff for a touchdown, score a rushing touchdown and have a receiving touchdown in the same game against Towson in 2021. He was third-team All-Colonial Athletic Association at kick returner that season.
Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors, and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
The watch list is comprised of 90 college football student-athletes from 68 different schools.
Vanhorse is the third Hoosier to be named to a preseason watch list:
