The 19-year-old Bates is preparing for his sophomore season at IU.
He appeared in 32 games and averaged 3.9 points and 1.3 rebounds as a true freshman in 2021-22. He shot 83.3% from free throw line (20-of-24) and added 20 assists and eight steals.
The Kansas City, Kan. product, who came to IU via IMG Academy, was ranked the No. 23 prospect in the nation by ESPN. Bates was originally committed to Texas before a coaching change there led to him signing with Indiana. He was Mike Woodson’s first high school commit.
