Class of 2024 guard Boogie Fland announced on Friday he has committed to Kentucky.
After months of effort prioritizing Fland, the news came as a surprise to Indiana when a decision was reached this week.
So where does that leave IU basketball looking forward to the 2024-25 season?
For now, Indiana will focus on 2024 power forward/center Derik Queen, who should decide on a school in the next couple weeks. IU, Maryland and Houston appear to be his main schools.
But whatever happens with Queen, Indiana will have to address its backcourt prior to next season.
Indiana is certain to lose starting point guard Xavier Johnson after this season, so there’s a clear roster need. He’s the only IU guard who is out of eligibility after this season, but Johnson leaves a major void when it comes to proven success at the high major level.
The Hoosiers will have Trey Galloway, Anthony Leal, Gabe Cupps, C.J. Gunn and Jakai Newton in 2024-25 if everyone eligible to return does indeed come back.
Most of Indiana’s other main 2024 guard prospects are off the board at this point.
Kentucky-based guard Travis Perry hasn’t committed anywhere, but it seems unlikely Indiana could jump in and make up ground at this point. Other former lead guard targets like Curtis Givens and Jaeden Mustaf have already committed elsewhere. And top-5 prospect Dylan Harper is still available, but he seems like a longshot despite IU being in his final five schools.
After Jalen Hood-Schifino’s remarkable one-and-done season and first round NBA Draft selection, IU seemed primed to land a high-end point guard in the 2024 class. Hood-Schifino was on top of the minds of many recruiting prospects The Daily Hoosier spoke to this spring and summer.
But instead it seems Indiana will likely have to see who frees up in the spring.
It seems improbable, but Indiana has landed a senior high school recruiting target in each of the last three springs following a de-commitment. So that possibility cannot be ignored.
Beyond that, IU will look to the transfer portal for a guard next spring.
