This is an opportunity that has been long awaited.
Indiana earned the No. 4 seed in the Mercado Region of the 2021 NCAA Tournament field announced on Monday night. The Hoosiers play 13th-seeded VCU in the opening round Monday at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU. The entire event is being held in the San Antonio, Texas area.
IU was similarly a lock for the event in 2020 before it was canceled,
It marks the highest seed ever for the program, besting its highest overall seed as a No. 6 seed in the 1983 season when the field was 36. In the modern format of 64 teams, the program’s previous high seed was No. 8 in 2002. Indiana likely would have been a No. 4 or No. 5 seed in 2020.
The Hoosiers will play in their seventh NCAA Tournament in school history and received back-to-back berths to the Big Dance for the first time since 1994-95. Indiana is 3-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament as seventh year head coach Teri Moren brings a 2-2 record into tournament action.
The Hoosiers (18-5) were a No. 3 seed in the final seedings reveal two weeks ago. An opening round loss at the Big Ten Tournament to Michigan State seemingly cost them a rung.
VCU (16-10) was an unexpected winner of the Atlantic-10 Tournament as the 5 seed.
If they advance, Indiana will face the winner of No. 5 seed Gonzaga and No. 12 Belmont in the second round.
