Indiana fought back from a 15-point fourth quarter deficit but couldn’t find a way at the Breslin Center Sunday afternoon.
The Hoosiers fell behind 55-40 with 9:05 at No. 21/22 Michigan State but pulled to within five on a Shay Ciezki jumper to make 62-57 with 2:44 remaining. But the Spartans outscored IU 9-3 over the next two minutes to pull away for good, winning 73-65 in East Lansing.
After a win last week over Ohio State, for Indiana it was a missed opportunity to win a second straight game over a ranked opponent and solidify their NCAA Tournament resume.
Turnovers and inconsistent shooting — two issues that have plagued IU this season — were the main culprits.
The Hoosiers shot just 6-of-22 from three (27.3%) and coughed it up 18 times. MSU scored 24 points off the IU turnovers.
Indiana had four players in double figures led by Chloe Moore-McNeil with 15. She added 10 rebounds but also had four turnovers. Karoline Striplin had 14 points, while Shay Ciezki and Yarden Garzon both added 13.
The Hoosiers (17-10, 9-7) will return to action on Thursday when they host Maryland.
