The 2028 Olympic Games will be in the United States.
But legendary former IU swimmer Lilly King says she’ll be a spectator in Los Angeles.
In a press conference prior to the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials, the 27-year-old King confirmed that if she qualifies for the 2024 Games in Paris, they would be her final Olympics.
“I will be watching in Los Angeles (in 2028) and I’m good with that decision,” King said. “I will not be going another four years, I’ll be cheering on the team.”
King did not announce her retirement from the sport, however. Right now she just knows she won’t keep going until 2028.
The Evansville, Ind. native is one of thirty-one Hoosiers who will compete in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Indianapolis, June 15-23. For the first time ever, the event will be staged on a football field as Lucas Oil Stadium plays host to the qualifying event.
A five-time Olympic medalist, King enters the 2024 trials as the No. 1 seed in the 100-meter breaststroke – with the only seed time under 1:05 – and the No. 2 seed in the 200-meter breaststroke.
At IU King won the NCAA titles in the 100 and 200 breast all four years.
