In her final Olympic race, Lilly King struck gold.
King swam the breaststroke leg of the 4×100-meter medley relay on Sunday in Paris, and she helped the United States win the gold medal and set a new world record in the event, at 3:49.63. The Indiana alum’s breaststroke leg helped the U.S. start to pull away from the rest of the field.
This is King’s third Olympic gold medal, and sixth Olympic medal overall. The Evansville native has now won medals in all three Olympic Games she’s competed in.
King also swam in two individual events in Paris, and qualified for the final in both races, but didn’t medal. She finished eighth in the 200m breaststroke, and she came in fourth in the 100m breaststroke — by .01 seconds.
The relay gold brings King’s swimming career to an end, leaving a strong legacy as both a U.S. Swimming and an IU great.
Previously in Paris, current IU swimmer Anna Peplowski, former IU swimmer Blake Pieroni, and incoming IU transfer swimmer Matt King each earned medals in relay events.
