Mike Woodson’s tenure as the head coach of IU basketball will come to an end next month.
His appearances with Don Fischer on the radio have apparently already ended.
For more than 50 years IU fans have listened to Fischer interview the school’s football and basketball coaches on pregame, and postgame appearances, along with a regular one hour midweek radio show. Fischer even called Woodson’s games as an Indiana player.
But since IU AD Scott Dolson announced on Feb. 7 Woodson’s retirement at the end of the season, the coach has not appeared on any of those radio spots with Fischer.
IU assistants and staff members have filled in for Woodson, including on Monday evening, when associate head coach Kenya Hunter sat in for the first hour-long episode of “Inside IU Basketball with Mike Woodson” since the announcement of Woodson’s departure. During the episode, Fischer said associated head coach Yasir Rosemond is doing the show scheduled for next Monday evening.
The Daily Hoosier asked for a comment from Indiana on the reason why Woodson is not continuing his radio appearances, but did not receive an immediate response. This story will be updated if Indiana responds.
The scheduled number of episodes of the hour show had already been scaled back considerably this year. Woodson was only slated for nine shows this season, compared to 14 in Archie Miller’s final year as the program’s head coach in 2020-21.
Woodson has also done very few pregame media interviews this year. He has done just one in calendar 2025, and no players have been made available to the media before games either. Woodson’s postgame media availabilities have been very short, typically lasting no more than six to seven minutes. Players have not been made available to the media after Indiana’s last three losses.
Woodson’s contract requires him to make a “reasonable number” of radio appearances as part of his outside, marketing and promotion income, which constitutes the vast majority of his compensation. Here’s the language in his contract:
“As part of his duties as head men’s basketball coach, the Employee shall be obligated to promote the University’s men’s basketball program, including providing his full and complete cooperation with the broadcast of any television, radio or other media programs related to the University’s men’s basketball program, including but not limited to a reasonable number of coaches shows, pre-game and post-game shows, and off-season shows.”
