Indiana coach Mike Woodson spoke with the media Friday morning, just hours after the news broke his lone class of 2024 commit, 5-star Liam McNeeley, was reopening his recruitment.
IU leaked earlier this week Woodson would be back as head coach for the 2024-25 season, his fourth in Bloomington.
Woodson was asked during a Friday Zoom conference about his level of concern with having no commits in the 2024 class. It was just the latest uncomfortable question the 65-year-old has faced this week.
On Wednesday following his team’s 70-58 win at Minnesota, Woodson was asked about the news of him being retained for a fourth season. He wouldn’t discuss it.
On Friday morning he gave a similar answer when it comes to the 2024 recruiting class — no comment.
“I’m not going to talk about recruiting with you guys. I’m just not,” Woodson said. “It’s something we got to do and this is going to be a big summer for us. We got to go out and get field players. You can lose players. You just never know. That’s what the portal presents.
“That’s just how I feel about it at this point.”
With the loss of McNeeley, Indiana currently projects to have ten scholarship players on next year’s team, and that’s before the almost certain loss of Kel’el Ware to the NBA Draft. So let’s call it nine.
Under Woodson, Indiana has lost multiple players to the transfer portal during each offseason. And it won’t come as a surprise if that continues to be the case in the coming weeks. So a major roster overhaul via the transfer portal is forthcoming.
Indiana has two players who are seniors — Anthony Leal and Trey Galloway — with a fifth-year of eligibility available. Woodson did not know as of Friday morning if either player would be participating in Sunday’s Senior Day festivities.
The Daily Hoosier expects IU to release the names of the players participating on Senior Day later on Friday.
