Tom Allen’s seven year run as the head coach of the IU football program has come to an end according to multiple reports. Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star reported it first. Adam Rittenberg of ESPN also confirmed the news, along with Pat Forde. According to Rittenberg, the staff will meet at 10 a.m. ET Sunday.
A source also confirmed the news to The Daily Hoosier.
The move became seemingly inevitable after IU missed out on a bowl game for a third straight season.
Under Allen’s direction, Indiana had just a 9-27 record over the last three seasons, the second worst tally in the Power Five. And the Hoosiers were just 3-24 in the Big Ten over that span.
That three-year stretch came immediately after Allen led IU to a 14-7 mark and two January bowl games in 2019-20. His contract was extended in early 2021.
Under the terms of their contract, Indiana University owes Allen a buyout of $20.8 million. That amount will be paid over the remaining term of the contract that runs through 2027, meaning IU will incur the buyout incrementally at a cost of a about $5 million per year. The buyout amount can be offset by any Allen earnings when/if he obtains a new position.
