Northwestern starting guard Ty Berry tore his meniscus and is out for the rest of the season, Wildcats head coach Chris Collins announced Wednesday.
The news comes as IU gets set to face Northwestern on Sunday evening in Bloomington.
The 6-foot-3 senior guard was enjoying his best season, averaging 11.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals in 29.7 minutes a game.
Berry leads the team with 55 threes made. He is shooting 43.3 percent from three, which is also a team high and 83rd in the nation.
Northwestern won both games it has played since the injury, home wins over Nebraska and Penn State. He left the Nebraska game with the injury during the first half.
The loss of Berry means Indiana should matchup better with the Wildcats. In their first game without Berry over the weekend, Northwestern started 6-foot-7 forward Nick Martinelli in his place.
Martinelli started alongside Boo Buie (6-foot-2), Ryan Langborg (6-foot-4), Brooks Barnhizer (6-foot-6) and Matthew Nicholson (7-feet). Off the bench head coach Chris Collins only played freshman guard Jordan Clayton, who had a very limited role before Berry’s injury, and big men Luke Hunger and Blake Preston.
Northwestern would likely put either Martinelli or Barnhizer on IU forward Malik Reneau, although they will almost certainly double-team all of his post touches.
Northwestern plays at Rutgers on Thursday evening before heading to Bloomington.
Indiana has not defeated Northwestern during the Mike Woodson era. Their last win in the series came on Feb. 10, 2021, a 79-76 double-overtime victory in Evanston.
