Parker Stewart will return to UT Martin for his final season of college basketball.
The 6-foot-5 guard arrived at IU from UT Martin in January, 2021 after his father and UT Martin head coach Anthony Stewart passed prior to the 2020-21 season.
Stewart paid homage to his father in a social media post announcing the move.
“One thing I’ve learned in life is to never take time around the people you love for granted,” Stewart said on his Twitter page. “I will be using my additional year of eligibility and will be returning HOME, to UTM for my final season. Long Live 45…my goal is to complete your mission. Mama I’m back.”
Stewart wore number 45 at IU in honor of his father, and the photos included with his post seem to indicate he will do the same at UT Martin next season.
An Academic All-Big Ten performer, Stewart played in 34 games in his lone season with IU and started 31 times. He averaged 6.2 points and led the team in 3-pointers made (53) and in long distance percentage (39.3 percent). Stewart added 2.1 rebounds, 33 assists and 14 steals.
Although he had the extra year of eligibility, Stewart participated in IU’s Senior Night ceremony, signaling his likely departure. He entered the transfer portal in March.
Stewart will look to regain the productivity he enjoyed during his lone season at UT Martin. In 2019-20 he was the only NCAA Division I player to average at least 19.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 3-point field goals made per game.
