Class of 2024 shooting guard Jonathan Powell is a 4-star from Ohio. Last week he said he’ll focus on six schools in his recruitment.
Along with IU, Powell says he’s considering Clemson, Michigan State, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, and Xavier.
Indiana is going after a number of wing prospects in the 2024 class, so it will be interesting to see where this one goes as both sides narrow their focus.
The Daily Hoosier caught up with Powell in Fort Wayne on Saturday at the Bill Hensley Run-n-Slam. Here’s what Powell had to say over the weekend regarding where things stand in his process.
TDH: What went into narrowing down your recruitment to six schools?
JP – Basically just the schools that were a fit for me, with the coaching staffs, the development and the love from the coaches.
TDH: What are you going to be focused on this summer as you look to further narrow things down and settle in on a college?
JP – Basically I just need to find a place that fits me and family best, a place that can develop me as a player, on and off the court.
TDH: How much of a role will playing close to him factor into your decision?
JP – I talked to my mom and my family, it matters, but at the same time, it’s all about finding that place for me, if it’s eight hours away, 45 minutes away, two hours away, it’s about eventually finding that spot that fits me.
TDH note: Powell lives in Centerville, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton.
TDH: Gabe (Cupps) went through this process already, what has his message been to you in terms of how to approach it?
JP – He just tells me to not really worry about it all and just keep working and stay humble.
TDH note: Powell was teammates with 2023 IU signee Gabe Cupps at Centerville H.S.
TDH: How are things going with Indiana right now?
JP – They are pushing pretty hard, Coach Woodson and them, and their message to me is to just keep working and doing my thing. Indiana is known for basketball, and the history behind IU basketball is unreal. Coach Woodson comes from the NBA, so their plan is to get me ready for the NBA.
TDH: What stands out to you about Indiana’s playing style that you think matches your game?
JP – Having players like me, shooters, and coming off the dribble, they have certain plays for that, and their development, practice after practice, game after game can help get me ready.
Other Outlets: What were the main things you wanted to work and get better at this spring and summer?
JP – I’d say the main thing I wanted to do is get better with my ball handling to be able to create for myself and my teammates.
TDH: Do you have any visits set up, and do you have a rough sense for when you’d like to be done with everything from a recruiting standpoint?
JP – Right now I have a visit to Xavier later this month, that’s it right now. I don’t have a set timeline or anything like that.
