Indiana lost both a quarterback and receiver on Tuesday morning as the college football transfer portal reopened.
The Hoosiers had three young quarterbacks with at least three years of eligibility remaining, and all of them appear to be waiting in the wings behind veteran Kurtis Rourke this season.
So it wasn’t going to come as a surprise to see one of them leave via the portal.
Broc Lowry was fourth on the depth chart this spring behind Rourke, Tayven Jackson and Tyler Cherry, and he entered the portal Tuesday.
Lowry appeared in four games in 2023, and redshirted his initial collegiate season. He completed his first and still only collegiate pass attempt for eight yards on a fake punt at Maryland last year.
From Canfield, Ohio, Lowry was a consensus three-star recruit in the 2023 class. He was rated the No. 25 pocket passer nationally by ESPN, and the top quarterback in Ohio.
Indiana also has freshman quarterback Alberto Mendoza arriving in June.
Wide receiver Derrik Bohler also entered the portal on Tuesday.
Bohler also arrived at IU with the class of 2023 from Miami, Fla. as a 3-star recruit. He did not see any action as a freshman in 2023, and faced an uphill battle against stiff competition in 2024.
The IU receiver room features six players with at least 63 career catches and 723 career yards. Four have at least 82 catches and 1,191 yards.
Previously announced, running back Trent Howland and wide receiver Kam Perry also formally entered the portal Tuesday. Since the end of the 2023 season, Indiana has had at least 30 players enter the portal.
