The Daily Hoosier caught up with Flint, Mich. based guard Trey McKenney at the Westfield, Ind. Nike EYBL stop over the weekend.
Indiana has been involved with the 6-foot-5 McKenney for more than two years at this point, offering him in 2022.
According to the On3 Industry Average, McKenney is a 5-star in the class of 2025, and the No. 12 overall player.
As a junior at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, McKenney averaged 22.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He led OLSM to a state title and recorded 32 points and 10 rebounds in the championship game.
TDH – So just checking in, how do you feel your spring and summer is going so far?
McKenney – My team has been struggling this spring but I think I’m doing pretty well but I think I can take it to another level. We’ll get it going.
TDH – Your game seems almost effortless at times, getting where you want to go and scoring at all three levels. What do you still want to improve?
McKenney – I really just want to try to be more efficient, and show people that I can play on the defensive end as well, and create for others too, that’s a big thing for me.
TDH – I know you’ve been talking to Indiana for a long time, and you’ve been down there for multiple visits. Is that dialogue still strong with those guys?
McKenney – Yeah, the relationship is still strong with coach (Brian) Walsh and coach (Mike) Woodson.
(Note: IU offered McKenney a scholarship in June of 2022)
TDH – With your recruitment, when do you think you’ll start to narrow things down and begin taking visits?
McKenney – I think I’ll start taking visits in the fall and the winter, and I think I’ll start narrowing things down here in a couple weeks or so, with a list of who I’m interested in who’s interested in me. It won’t be that much, like 8-10 to schools.
(Note: McKenney has taken official visits to Georgetown, TCU, and Rutgers so far. We’d expect Michigan State and Michigan to be key players as well. He has more than 30 high major offers.)
TDH – Will Indiana still be in contention when you put that list out?
McKenney – Yes.
TDH – What do you like about Coach Woodson and the program?
McKenney – Them just being able to have a relationship with me and my family, and being able to develop as a person, and him (Woodson) knowing every step of the way in basketball, obviously in college and the NBA. So him just being able to understand how to get there and develop as a basketball player is great. The NBA is where I want to go, and he knows what they look for.
