Darian DeVries will be the 31st head coach of the IU basketball program, multiple outlets are reporting.
Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello of ESPN first reported late Tuesday afternoon DeVries was the IU target to replace Mike Woodson.
Multiple national outlets, including ESPN, followed with the news that Indiana was set to hire DeVries.
An Iowa native, DeVries completely rebuilt West Virginia this past season, his lone year in Morgantown.
Just one scholarship player remained from last year’s 9-23 Mountaineer squad. With a total of 14 newcomers, including 10 transfers, DeVries led West Virginia to a 19-13 record despite star wing, his 6-foot-7 son Tucker (14.9 ppg, 47.3% from three), missing all but eight games due to an injury.
Tucker DeVries has a year of eligibility remaining and would be widely expected to follow his father to Bloomington.
Prior to West Virginia, DeVries took over a Drake program that had one 20-win season in nearly 50 years. He posted six straight 20-win seasons at Drake from 2018 to 2024, averaging 25 wins per year along with the way. DeVries led Drake to the NCAA Tournament in three of his last four seasons with the program.
DeVries, a two-time MVC Coach of the Year (2019 and 2021), was a finalist for the 2023-24 Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award, given annually to the top mid-major head coach in college basketball.
Prior to Drake, DeVries was an assistant coach at Creighton for 17 years under Greg McDermott and Dana Altman. He joined Creighton as a graduate manager and spent 20 years at Creighton. During his time there, he was part of 19 postseason appearances and 12 NCAA Tournament bids. Creighton was 460-211 overall and 231-129 in conference games during DeVries’ tenure at Creighton.
The 49-year-old DeVries is a 1998 graduate of Northern Iowa. He’s a native of Aplington, Iowa.
