One of Indiana’s deepest positions has gotten a little less crowded.
Indiana redshirt junior Cole Gest has entered his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal according to a report by Taylor Lehman of Rivals.
The starting running back to open the 2018 season, Gest suffered a season ending knee injury during week one a year ago, and had since fallen behind Stevie Scott, Ronnie Walker, Jr., and Sampson James on the depth chart.
Gest impressed during the 2017 season when he rushed for 428 yards with a 4.6 yards per carry average. The injury, along with the emergence of Scott and strong recruiting at the position created new challenges for Gest, however.
For his Indiana career Gest has 112 carries for 504 yards (4.5 ypc) and two touchdowns. He added 17 receptions for 94 yards and another score.
Gest is just the latest in a wave of recent running back defections from the program. Preceding him were Craig Nelson (transfer), Ivory Winters (transfer), Kristian Pechac (left team), Morgan Ellison (kicked off team), Tyler Natee (transfer), Alex Rodriguez (transfer) and Devonte Williams (transfer).
Beyond Scott, Walker and James, Ahrod Lloyd is the only other scholarship running back on the roster.
