Indiana hasn’t seen the last of Tom Allen.
According to a report by Pete Thamel of ESPN, Allen will remain in the Big Ten next season. He is working on a deal with Penn State to be their next defensive coordinator.
“Sources: Penn State is targeting former Indiana coach Tom Allen to be the school’s next defensive coordinator,” Thamel writes. “Deal is being finalized and is expected to come together in the upcoming days.”
Indiana fired Allen at the end of the 2023 season and agreed to pay him a negotiated $15.5 million buyout. He coached seven seasons for the Hoosiers and amassed a 33-49 record during his tenure.
Penn State coach James Franklin has always been very complimentary of Allen.
“When you talk about Indiana and Tom Allen, I like Tom a lot,” Franklin said back in October before the Lions faced the Hoosiers. “Really good guy. Really good representative of Indiana University and our conference.”
Allen’s first role at Indiana was defensive coordinator under Kevin Wilson in 2016. That season the Hoosiers allowed 120 fewer yards per game and 10 fewer points per game than the prior season. Allen was named the head coach at the end of the 2016 campaign.
Under the Big Ten’s new scheduling format, Indiana does not play Penn State in 2024.
