Indiana was widely speculated to be potential destination for Kentucky guard Antonio Reeves if he entered the transfer portal.
But it appears that speculation can stop.
Since we included Reeves in a story on potential late additions a couple weeks back, we’ll close the loop with an update today.
Multiple national reporters indicated on Wednesday morning Reeves has returned to the Kentucky campus and is expected to play for the Wildcats next season.
Reeves averaged 14.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists for the Wildcats in 2022-23 while shooting 40 percent from three, and he appeared to address a roster need for the Hoosiers.
After this news however, it is looking more and more likely that IU will move forward with 12 scholarship players for the 2023-24 campaign. Other recent potential prospects who surfaced recently such as class of 2023 shooting guard Joey Hart and Dayton transfer wing Mike Sharavjamts are going elsewhere.
As things stand, IU projects to open next season with Xavier Johnson and Trey Galloway as its starting backcourt. And they’ll bring a lot of experience to the floor. Johnson has 126 career starts over his college career, while Galloway has 35.
But the backcourt will still be a question mark going into next season if the current roster remains unchanged in November, in part due to a lack of proven depth.
The Hoosiers will hope for major developmental strides from sophomore C.J. Gunn, along with contributions from freshmen Gabe Cupps and Jakai Newton.
The transfer portal remains open for graduates, however. And we’ll continue to track other potential late additions should they emerge.
