Selection Sunday has arrived.
Indiana women’s basketball has waited all week to learn its NCAA Tournament fate, as the Hoosiers hope to host for the third straight year. The selection show is Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
IU has projected as a No. 4 seed in each of the selection committee’s top 16 seed reveals, but the team ended on a sour note after blowing a big lead against Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament. That result stoked fears that Teri Moren’s squad could slip to a No. 5 seed and have to travel for March Madness.
However, the Hoosiers got some helpful results in other games after they lost to the Wolverines. Oklahoma losing to Iowa State and Kansas State losing to Texas in the Big 12 Tournament could benefit IU, as both the Sooners and Wildcats are in similar situations. Portland upsetting Gonzaga and Florida State defeating Syracuse were also potentially big results for IU’s hosting hopes.
Indiana remains a No. 4 seed across four major bracketology projections.
ESPN (Charlie Creme) projects Indiana to face No. 13 seed Chattanooga in the first round, with No. 5 seed Syracuse facing No. 12 seed Florida Gulf Coast in the other game in the pod. Orange head coach Felisha Legette-Jack served as IU’s head coach from 2006 to 2012, and this would be her first game back at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall since she was fired in 2012.
HerHoopStats (Megan Gauer) has Indiana facing No. 13 seed Fairfield in the first round, with Oklahoma playing Drake in the adjacent 5-12 game.
The Athletic (Mark Schindler) predicts Indiana to face No. 13 see Marshall, with Oklahoma against FGCU in the 5-12 game.
Each of those three projections has Indiana in USC’s region in the bracket, which would mean the Hoosiers would play in Portland, Oregon if they advanced to the Sweet 16.
Sporting News (Bill Bender) listed seed projections without actual matchups or locations, and they, too, had IU as a No. 4 seed.
