Upon further review, C.J. West can play in the first half vs. Charlotte.
The IU defensive tackle was flagged for targeting when he made helmet-to-helmet contact with UCLA quarterback Ethan Garbers in the second half of Saturday’s 42-13 Indiana win.
That second half penalty carries the added punishment of a first half suspension in the next game. Indiana plays Charlotte at Noon ET on Saturday in Bloomington.
But Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti revealed on his Thursday radio show the Big Ten reviewed the foul and decided to rescind the targeting call.
West appeared to be already diving toward Garbers when the Bruins signal-caller bent down to pick up a fumble.
Starting cornerback D’Angelo Ponds was also flagged for targeting in the second half of the UCLA game and he is still expected to be suspended for the first half vs. Charlotte.
“I think there needs to be a balance there and common sense and intent, also,” Cignetti said on Monday of the targeting and roughing calls against his team. “Probably the most hardest hits in the game was when Aiden Fisher intercepted the pass and got hit in the head, and there’s no call for that one.
“You know, the other ones were kind of Mickey Mouse. So but, you know, that’s the way it went down Saturday, and we’re not going to change the way we play. I don’t think there was anything dirty out there, that’s for sure.”
The 6-foot-2 and 317-pound West has four tackles, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble on the season.
West transferred to IU from Kent State during the spring.
