ROSEMONT, Ill. — Indiana guard Trey Galloway said at Big Ten Media Day Thursday he expects to be a full participant at practice beginning next week.
The 6-foot-5 fifth-year guard has been rehabbing from offseason knee surgery related to an injury suffered in March.
Galloway says he has been participating in many aspects of the team activities since IU officially started practicing last week. But he also said he hasn’t felt like he needs to rush the process and risk reinjuring his knee.
“It’s been good, it’s been great to be back out there with the guys,” Galloway said. “It’s been a long process with the knee and everything, it takes a lot of time to really recover and stuff. I think we’ve done a good job with taking my time with everything, there’s no need to rush. I’ve been here for awhile.
“I know what I need to do to be ready.”
Galloway should have three weeks of full contact practice before Indiana plays their first exhibition game at Tennessee on Oct. 27, and more than four weeks before their first game on Nov. 6.
Redshirt freshman guard Jakai Newton is the only other Indiana player known to be dealing with an injury heading into the 2024-25 season. Newton said at IU’s in-house media he is 100 percent and expects to be ready to go for the season opener.
Injuries have been part of Galloway’s story since he arrived in Bloomington.
Last season he missed most of the home finale against Michigan State, as well as the Big Ten Tournament after suffering the knee injury.
He missed 15 games during his 2021-22 sophomore campaign due to two different injuries – a fractured wrist, and a groin injury that required surgery. He also missed two games during his freshman season, and three during his junior campaign due to minor injuries.
Galloway started all 31 regular season games for Indiana in 2023-24. He was one of four IU players to appear in all 20 Big Ten games. Galloway averaged career bests in points (10.6), assists (4.6), steals (1.2), and minutes (33.4) per game in his fourth season with the program.
Galloway was the first Hoosier since Isiah Thomas (1980-81) to have multiple 12-plus assist games in a single season. He closed Big Ten play with 105 total assists, tied for the second most in program history.
After the injury against Michigan State, Galloway told the crowd he was returning to IU for his final season of eligibility.
