Throughout his time at IU, injuries have been a part of Trey Galloway’s story.
He missed 15 games during his 2021-22 sophomore campaign due to two different injuries – a fractured wrist, and a groin injury that required surgery. He also missed two games during his freshman season, and three during his junior campaign due to minor injuries.
The latest challenge for the Culver, Ind. product is a knee injury that cost him the end of his senior season.
“I’ve dealt with a lot. I’ve already missed a summer before with my groin. I’ve had some tough blows with my wrist too. And now this, obviously. It’s really challenging, because you want to be out there with your teammates,” Galloway told former teammate Miller Kopp on the Player’s Perspective podcast.
The 6-foot-5 Galloway had offseason surgery related to the injury suffered during IU’s regular-season finale against Michigan State in early March. He missed most of that game as well as the Big Ten Tournament.
The message from IU coach Mike Woodson in May was Galloway should be ready to go by the beginning of the 2024-25 season.
Galloway says he is still on track, and he’s trying to stay positive through the final stages of his rehab.
“It’s feeling really good, and I 100 percent believe I’m going to be back to my normal self if I just keep doing the right things,” Galloway said. “I’m just excited to get back to my normal self, because it makes you realize how blessed we really are to be healthy and to be able to do the things we get to do.
“I’m lucky it’s now and I’m not missing games, but it still sucks to miss time, whenever it is. I think just knowing I have a chance to be fully back to myself, that’s very positive. That makes me happy. And knowing that I’m going to be able to keep pushing through it and see myself in a couple months and look back and think ‘Wow, that really wasn’t that bad.'”
Galloway started all 31 games for Indiana in 2023-24. He was one of four IU players to appear in all 20 Big Ten games. Galloway averaged career bests in points (10.6), assists (4.6), steals (1.2), and minutes (33.4) per game in his fourth season with the program.
Galloway was the first Hoosier since Isiah Thomas (1980-81) to have multiple 12-plus assist games in a single season. He closed Big Ten play with 105 total assists, tied for the second most in program history.
For his final season at IU, Galloway says he is more focused on wins than his own personal accomplishments.
“The reason I came back is to win, and be remembered as a winner,” he said.
“Indiana wasn’t great when I committed. It’s home. There’s nothing better than seeing Indiana at the top where it belongs. Obviously we’ve had a lot of ups and downs, but success would be being remembered as a winner, and going out as a winner this final year.”
