Urban Meyer was with the Ohio State football program the last time Indiana beat the Buckeyes in Columbus.
That was 1987, and the 60 year-old Meyer was a grad assistant at the time for Ohio State. He was there when OSU coach Earle Bruce said a 31-10 loss to Indiana was the darkest day for the Buckeye program.
That was the Bill Mallory era of IU football, and it was the last time the program had experienced sustained success.
Meyer knows better than most what a well coached football team looks like. You can Google him too, and the search engine will tell you he amassed a 187-32 record as a head coach.
So any praise coming Meyer is the lofty variety, and he had nothing but praise for Curt Cignetti and his coaching staff when, along with former IU coach Gerry DiNardo, he analyzed the Hoosiers offense on an episode of Urban Analysis on the Big Ten Network.
Meyer believes the Hoosiers have the leadership in place to deliver their program’s brightest days.
“This is one of the best coached teams in the Big Ten, and I’m going to go further — in the country,” Meyer told DiNardo. “There are so many things they’re doing right. I mean if we have two and a half hours here I’d like to go through all of them.”
Meyer went on to say that he’s heard some detractors say IU has played a soft schedule to this point in their 6-0 start to the season. He isn’t buying that argument.
“The schedule is fine,” Meyer said. “This is a hell of a team. And this is one of the best coached teams out there.”
Meyer and DiNardo went on to look at a few plays the offense executed at a high level against Maryland. You can watch the full segment below.
