There have been good runs.
Bill Mallory in the late 80s and early 90s, John Pont in 1967-68, Lee Corso in 1979-80, and Tom Allen in 2019-20 all come to mind.
But not since Bo McMillin in the 1940s has any coach of the IU football team amassed an overall winning record during his time in Bloomington.
In the latest illustration of how Indiana’s 2024 season is the college football version of the immovable object vs. the unstoppable force, enter Curt Cignetti.
You know, the “I win, Google me” guy.
You’ve no doubt read some of the stats that back up Cignetti’s claim.
Headlining the list — he has a 119-35 overall record, and he’s never had a losing season.
Cignetti went 52-9 during his time at James Madison, and last season he had the Dukes ranked No. 18 in the AP Poll late in the year.
But where does Cignetti rank among all active college football coaches in career winning percentage?
According to PFF, his .826 career mark is fourth.
And Cignetti is keeping good company on that list, joined by Ryan Day of Ohio State, Kirby Smart of Georgia, Kalen DeBoer of Alabama, and Dabo Swinney of Clemson — just to name a few.
Here’s the full list from PFF:
While his career percentage seems likely to take a hit, Cignetti and Indiana have a good chance to at least produce a .500 season in 2024.
The Hoosiers face three nonconference opponents at home in games they’ll be heavy favorites, and six of IU’s Big Ten opponents are teams thought to be in or very close to the bottom half of the 18-team league.
Indiana opens the 2024 season on Aug. 31 against Florida International.
