Indiana women’s basketball is looking to make it three straight years with a WNBA Draft selection.
The draft is Monday night at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN, and IU has two players in the field: forward Mackenzie Holmes and guard Sara Scalia.
The Hoosiers have had just five players selected in program history. Ali Patberg went in the third round in 2022, and Grace Berger’s first-round selection last year gave IU draft picks in consecutive years for the first time ever. Berger, at No. 7 overall, also became Indiana’s first-ever first-round pick.
Holmes and Scalia both have chances to be picked, but it appears unlikely that either will go in the first round. None of the prominent mock drafts have them going in the top 12. Holmes announced last week that she’s undergoing knee surgery that will keep her out for the entire 2024 season, but is still hoping to get drafted by a team that can give her a chance in 2025.
Many of those mock drafts list only the first round. The major projections that go beyond the first round are split between the second and third rounds for Holmes, and give Scalia a chance to go in the third round.
ESPN (Michael Voepel) projected Holmes to go in the second round, No. 19 overall to the Connecticut Sun, though that mock draft was published before she announced her knee surgery. ESPN also had Scalia going to Connecticut in the third round at No. 34 overall.
Yahoo Sports (Jackie Powell) pegged both Holmes and Scalia as third-round picks — Scalia at No. 26 to the Seattle Storm and Holmes at No. 33 to the Dallas Wings.
NBC Sports (Meghan McKeown) kept Holmes in the second round, at No. 19 overall to Connecticut, even after the health update.
SB Nation (Eric Nemchock) put Holmes in the third round at No. 27 overall to the Indiana Fever.
